George Howard’s practice focuses on corporate restructuring, bankruptcy, and other insolvency-related matters. In addition, he counsels clients on fraudulent conveyance, illegal dividend, preferential transfer, fiduciary duty, and corporate formalities issues.

George is currently actively involved as debtor’s counsel for Peabody Energy Corporation in its chapter 11 cases in the Eastern District of Missouri.

Having played an active role in Jones Day’s representations of companies, secured lenders, asset purchasers, and other significant constituencies in distressed situations, he has particular experience in chapter 11 restructurings, the sale and acquisition of assets through bankruptcy, and the negotiation and approval of debtor-in-possession financing arrangements.

George’s major past client representations include substantial involvement as debtor’s counsel in the chapter 11 cases of Molycorp (2015), NII Holdings (2014), Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market (2013), Hostess Brands (2012), Franciscan Communities St. Mary of the Woods (2011), Harry & David (2011), and Metaldyne Corporation (2009). Other recent representations include: Peabody Energy Corporation in the chapter 11 cases of its former subsidiary, Patriot Coal Corporation; WL Ross & Co. in connection with the $110 million acquisition of a majority stake in Navigator Holdings; Industrial Growth Partners in connection with its acquisition of Lexington Precision Corporation; and MBIA Insurance Corporation as a secured creditor in the chapter 11 cases of Forum Health and its affiliated debtors.

George is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Turnaround Management Association and has served on the TMA New York NextGen Committee.
